Recollective AI: Enhanced Summaries with Key Takeaways
We have already improved our AI-powered live meeting summaries by adding Key Takeaways as a new type of summary. Researchers are now instantly presented highlights of the most important information discussed in the meeting which helps them uncover new insights.
Our AI-powered solutions are being introduced progressively. If you're eager to try out these exciting new features, please sign up now for early access. Learn more at Recollective.ai.
Study Setting: Block Pasting
As a leading online qualitative research platform, ensuring the quality and authenticity of responses is of utmost importance. To prevent the use of generative AI for answering questions, we have implemented a new feature that blocks participants from pasting external content into their task responses. This forces participants to type out their answers, thus greatly reducing the risk of them submitting AI-generated content.
The paste-blocking option can be enabled on a task-by-task basis or as a study-wide option from Study Settings > Content Checks. If enabled for the study, exceptions can be made per task to allow pasting. Overall, we believe that this feature will lead to more authentic and valuable contributions.
Flexible Scheduling for Live Video Interviews
Recollective’s Live Video Interviews activity type already offers incredible scheduling capabilities. Participants can be empowered to pick their own meeting time slots and/or researchers can manually schedule new and follow-up meetings with ease.
We've improved the calendar component of the interview scheduling tool to offer greater flexibility. Previously, available meeting time slots were preset based on the planned meeting duration and any “buffer time” desired between meetings. While this approach optimizes for density and predictability, we heard from researchers that it lacked the flexibility they require in certain scenarios.
To address this, we've added a new Time Slots scheduling option when setting up a Live Video Interview activity. Administrators can choose between Flexible or Predictable time slots.
Flexible time slots allow meetings to be scheduled at any 15-minute increment regardless of meeting duration and buffer values. The full meeting time is still reserved and expressed to the meeting attendees. The overall start and end times for day are always respected and it still prevents double-booking within and across activities. Hosts can now also define their availability with greater precision.
Predictable time slots ensure available meeting times are preset based on the planned meeting duration and any buffer time needed between meetings. It effectively creates an optimized schedule in advance that maximizes the number of meetings that can fit within the activity start and end dates.

By adding a Live Video Only license to your site, you can benefit from unlimited live activity only studies and meetings with unlimited participants. Contact us for more information about Live Video Only licensing.
Editing unlocked for Fill the Blanks Tasks
Let’s face it, typo’s happen. We know everyone makes them from time to tiem and that they can be embarasing 😳 Whether you’re looking to correct a typo, or add more context to a question when participants aren’t correctly interpreting what’s been asked, Admins now have the ability to edit the text above and below blanks in the Fill the Blanks response template.
Blanks cannot be added or removed after responses have been received to protect the integrity of the data you’ve collected and avoid any accidental purging of responses.
Faster Probing with Saved Message Templates
We made asking probing questions easier when we released our multi-purpose Message Templates. However, we've noticed that using templates for probing is not a well-known use case. To address this, we've made changes to how Message Templates are displayed in studies.
⏰ Did you know that you can even save your probing questions as Message Templates ahead of time when programming your study? Give this a try on your next project!
Usability Improvements
- More control over Pending Administrators: You no longer need to wait for an administrator to accept their study invitation to add them to a home page card or subscribe them to study notifications. Pending administrators - those who have been invited but have not yet joined - now appear in lists, making it easier to configure projects when your colleagues are out of office or in other timezones. We indicate that their invitation is still pending so that you can remind them to register before the study launches.
- Easily open the chat window during live meetings: You can now open the chat window by clicking anywhere on a chat message bubble.
- Ability to lock Poll Task choices when randomizing: Polls appear throughout Recollective, from Poll Tasks and Fill the Blanks Tasks to Screening Questions and Live Activities. To eliminate order bias, you can randomize choices and lock or anchor select choices in place. The Poll Task Type was missing the ability to lock choices, so we have added this functionality.
- Say goodbye to Live Video Interview scheduling conflicts: Now, when you remove a participant from a study, their scheduled live video interview meetings are automatically cancelled. This ensures that their meeting won't consume a meeting slot or host availability.

NEW Task Type: Audio Recording
We have expanded the Multimedia Task to include a new Audio Recording submission option. It can be enabled either individually or in combination with other submission types (e.g. text, photo, video, screen recordings, and file uploads).
Collecting audio recordings can provide valuable insights into participants' thoughts and emotions. Unlike written responses, audio captures the richness of spoken communication, conveying nuances that may be lost otherwise. It also provides a natural and spontaneous channel for participants to provide candid feedback, leading to a deeper understanding of their experiences and opinions.
The new Audio Recording option enables participants to record directly from within the platform using their desktop browser or mobile device. Audio-only recordings are easier to produce than video and are particularly suitable for those with privacy concerns. In some markets, such as Germany, video capture may not be permitted.
As with video submissions, audio recordings will be instantly transcribed. Saving excerpts from an audio transcript will create a matching audio clip that can be downloaded and/or added to a Video Playlist as a highlight reel.
Subscription Warnings: Access Ending Soon
We understand that research projects often come with many deadlines, and that tracking software subscriptions can be a pain point for researchers. To alleviate this burden, Recollective Analysts will now receive a banner message warning them 3 days prior to their Participant Access end date. This message will appear at the top of the page, providing a reminder that access is ending and an easy way to contact us for an extension if needed. Analysts will also be shown a banner message 5 days before their Administrator Access ends.
These messages will help ensure that you are never taken by surprise when your Recollective subscriptions end. If you do not need the reminder, simply Dismiss the banner or select Remind me later to see it again during your next visit.
Usability Improvements
- Resending invitations and other email communications has become easier: Every email delivered to a user by Recollective can be reviewed and resent from within the Site Administration area (i.e. select a Panelist or Administrator in Site Admin to locate these options). Emails are listed by their delivery date and include their subject line, related study and a read date if the message has been opened. Selecting the subject line reveals the full message and a “Resend” option. Previously, if a participant's email address was updated, the resend action would not detect the change and simply retry the original address. Recollective will now always resend emails to a user’s current email address. Just be sure to save any email address changes prior to using the “Resend” option. We hope this will save you a lot of time when correcting emails and resending missed invitations.
- Save time configuring new studies with site-level Privacy Settings: A new Settings section named "Privacy Settings" has been added to the Site Administration area. These settings act as the default privacy settings for all new studies created within the site. Privacy settings can still be customized within a study. For Recollective Connect license holders, these settings also determine how participants and administrators appear to one another within the site-level discussion Forums.

Live Activities: Transcript export of translations
We have added the transcription of any translators to the Excel version of the meeting transcript for both Live Video Interview and Live Group Chat Activities. When simultaneous translators assist live meetings, their dedicated audio channels will now be included in the final transcript export as a separate tab or worksheet in the Excel export.
System Check: Audio and video test updates
The System Check feature enables users to test their audio and video connections before joining a live meeting. During the video test, users are asked to confirm that their camera is functioning by previewing their camera feed. The audio test requires the user to make a brief recording and listen to it. With this update, users must follow all of these steps to receive a "Pass" status, ensuring that participants who have passed the System Check are ready for a successful live meeting experience. If a user cannot complete one of the tests, they can proceed to the remaining checks by selecting "Skip," but they will not receive a full pass on the System Check.
Single Sign On: Updating panelists with active sessions
Recollective's Single Sign-On (SSO) allows for automatic creation or updating of accounts and then initiating a new session without users needing to register or login.
In this release, we have further enhanced SSO to allow for account updates via SSO for users that are already logged into their Recollective site. This means that if a user has an active session within Recollective, they can still be redirected to Recollective via SSO and have any profile updates applied. Previously, these profile updates required that the returning user be logged out of Recollective prior to their arrival.
Live Activities: Group meeting improvements
We’ve made a number of smaller updates to the live meeting experience for Live Group Chat meetings to help it look and feel better while in a meeting:
- The sizing (aspect ratio) of the individual participant webcam video feeds is now more consistent regardless of the browser dimensions or device in use. This will reduce amount of variance and active resizing as the meeting interface updates.
- If a participant disables their camera while in a meeting, they are automatically re-sorted to appear after any participants that still have their camera enabled. If the user chooses to re-enable their camera, they will now appear as the last person with their camera enabled instead of being placed back into their previous position. This creates less visual disruption.
- For larger meetings, if an active speaker is not on the first “page” of the Gallery or Spotlight view, that person will now be moved to the last position on the first page rather than the second position (i.e. after your own video). This also creates less disruption.
- If a user changes their “Performance Profile” (e.g. an option to view more or less people per page to control bandwidth consumption), the connection update made by that change will no longer make it appear as if the user exited and re-entered the room. They will also remain in the same position in the Gallery view.

Bulk Export of Chart Summary Data Tables
Charts in Recollective can already be fully customized prior to being exported into various formats. The chart type, its title and description can all be modified. Charted elements can be combined, renamed and recolored. Even the decimal precision can be customized.
Sometimes, however, you might wish to recreate a set of charts in Excel to make use of Excel’s full charting capabilities. With this in mind, we’ve now made it easier to bulk export the summary data for all charts while preserving your customizations. Creating new charts in Excel from these exported summary data tables takes only a few clicks.
When exported, the data for each chart will appear as a separate worksheet within a single Excel workbook. Each worksheet will include metadata such as the task name, task type, source URL, and base number of responses. Any segments or advanced filters applied prior to export will be respected.
Admins with permission to export data from a study will find this new option on the Summary tab while viewing all available Charts. The option will also appear in the Activity Options menu.
Please watch the video below to see the Bulk Export of Chart Summary Data in action!
Single Sign-On Improvements
In February, we released an enhanced version of Single Sign-On (SSO). This release includes two important improvements to the new SSO experience:
- Automatic limiting of segment visibility: Segments created via SSO will now automatically be limited in visibility to the studies assigned during the same SSO request. The visibility can be updated at any time by editing the newly created segment.
- Deactivating and reactivating users: Users can now be deactivated or reactivated via the SSO login endpoint using a new
status
property.
Other Usability Improvements
- Automatic login for Admins invited to join a study: When inviting existing administrators to join a study, the invitation email will now perform an automatic login. This is will help manually pre-registered administrators to gain access to the site if it’s their first visit.
- Profile fields in CSV exports: Profile fields associated to panelists will now appear in all CSV exports alongside their segments. If profile field visibility has been limited for the study, this limitation will be respected.
- Accessibility improvements: To improve the accessibility of Recollective for users with visual impairments, various system colours have been updated to provide sufficient contrast to meet the WCAG standard for “AA” compliance.

New Study Setting: Profile Field Visibility in Studies
When reusing panelists across multiple studies, profile fields that were added exclusively for past studies may remain visible on panelist profiles within new studies. To address this issue, analysts and moderators can now control which profile fields appear in a study. By restricting profile fields, only the selected fields will appear in the study-level profiles of participants, as well as in any transcripts and exports.
See Profile Field Visibility in Studies in action!
Accelerated Live Support
We made several changes behind the scenes so that our Support Specialists can provide even more efficient live support to Hosts, participants, and backroom observers during live meetings.
Other Usability Improvements
- To improve the accessibility of Recollective for users with visual impairments, various colours have been updated to provide sufficient contrast to meet the WCAG standard for “AA” compliance.
- When adding a new Administrator account manually, there’s now one less step to remember when filling out the form. Force password change will be enabled by default.

Bulk Removal of Inactive Participant Data
Analysts and Moderators may wish to remove incomplete or low-quality responses in a study to ensure such data doesn’t skew the final reports. Recollective already allows you to delete individual Activity responses but our latest release includes a new Delete Contributions feature which permits you to remove all Activity and Discussion responses from one or more inactive participants at once.
A new option called Inactive has been added to the Participant Directory. When you select this option, the directory will list Panelists that were previously part of the study but have been removed or deactivated.
With just a few clicks, you can delete either the contributions of a single panelist or multiple panelists' contributions simultaneously.
Once “Delete Contributions” is selected, a confirmation modal will appear. You will have the option to remove the user from the “Inactive” list at the same time.
Once contributions are deleted, they will no longer appear in summaries or be included in any transcripts or data exports. Charts and word cloud will be redrawn automatically as necessary.
Recollective Single Sign-On (SSO) v2
Recollective Single Sign-On (SSO) is an API that enables automatic authentication of new and returning users at your Recollective site. With SSO, accounts are created or updated automatically, and new sessions are initiated without the need for users to register or log in. While SSO is primarily intended for Panelist accounts, it can also be used to authenticate Administrators.
This updated approach to SSO improves both usability and security. It features an improved cryptographic signature that will expire within a specific timeframe.
The new SSO v2 offers an enhanced experience with:
- An API endpoint for user authentication
- An API endpoint to assist with security signature generation
- A new API Access settings area for managing API keys
- A new Single Single-On utility for learning and experimenting with both API endpoints
To learn more about SSO, please contact our help desk or your account representative.
Segments: Simplified visibility options
Since June 2022, segments created in a study, either through programming or Bulk Import, are automatically only visible in that study. You can update the visibility of a segment in the Site Administration area to make it appear in other studies.
We’ve simplified these controls offering you the option to make a segment visible in:
- All studies
- Select studies
- No studies
☝️ We are on a mission to improve segment management. This is the first of several planned improvements in this area. Keep an eye out for more great segment management features in 2023.
January 10, 2023
Study Copy: Cascade default time zone changes
Recollective already allows you to copy an entire Study to keep as a backup or to use as a template for your next Study. Now, when you select a new time zone in the Study Copy modal, all copied activities and discussions in the newly created study will make use of that new time zone.
Activities Transcript: Include custom blank labels
Custom blank labels for Fill the Blanks Tasks are now included in the HTML output of the Activities Transcript. This is useful when exporting an Instructions Only Activities Transcript for translation into another language as it maintains the custom label that will be visible to participants.
Various Style & Icon Updates:
- Update various colours for accessibility: To make Recollective more accessible to users with visual impairments, some default accent colours and the desaturated scale for custom colours has been updated. This change is part of an ongoing effort to provide sufficient contrast to meet the WCAG standard for “AA” compliance.
- Mobile navigation and icon updates: Mobile navigation has been improved with new labels and icons in the Study Admin menu and a top accent border on the selected tab shown at them bottom of the viewport.
Other Improvements
- Updated password storage: To protect your site from unwanted users and improve overall security, passwords are now stored with bcrypt hashing. Bcrypt hashing uses a unique salt value for each password making it more resistant to attacks.
- Ability to assign studies with single sign-on: SSO supports a new Studies parameter allowing you to assign participants to a study directly via SSO without relying on the Shared Invitation link. Note that studies do not have to be Open to benefit from this new parameter.
- Prevent unwanted zoom on iOS input: For iOS mobile devices, Recollective will no longer zoom in when working with certain forms.

Video Playlists: Single Video Highlight Reel
Recollective’s new Video Playlists feature now includes an export option to generate beautiful highlight reel videos with smooth cross-fade transitions and dynamic text overlays.
It is unique in how it can overlay text captions that provide important context for each clip with minimal effort. These text overlays are customizable and generated via dynamic values drawn directly from the individual video clips.
During the export process, text is rendered automatically into each video clip by dynamically pulling in the required information about the participant, the source activity or the clip itself.
Two white lines of text will appear over a dark translucent rectangle to ensure they can be clearly read over bright video clips. You can even control how long the text appears on each clip (e.g. 5 seconds).
Many variables are made available for the text overlay template such as the participant’s First Name, Last Name Initial, Username and Panelist ID. Even custom Profile Fields can also be included by specifying the field name in a dynamic tag {p:fieldname}
. Other variables are made available to highlight the source activity of the video clip, the original date of the response or simply information about the current clip and playlist. Once defined, this template is saved for future exports.
Once the export is initiated, an animated progress bar will appear on the page so you can track its progress. All previous exports remain listed and available for download so your entire team will have easy access to the exports without having to regenerate them. Any unwanted exports can easily be removed from the list.
Note that exporting a playlist as Multiple Video Files has also been improved in this release. Rather than generating the export in the background, the ZIP file of video clips starts downloading instantly.
Learn more about this new feature in our blog post, Product Update: Highlight Reels.
Charts: Decimal Precision
Chart customization now includes ability to set the desired decimal precision for all charts. This applies to absolute values and percentages. Admin can select a “No Decimals” (e.g. whole numbers only) OR they can restrict it to 1 or 2 decimals of precision.
Video Upload: Streamlined Appearance
The look and feel of video uploading has been updated to the appearance of photo upload. A larger drop target is provided when dragging videos onto the browser. File selection is still possible. Tabs are available to access the webcam or screen recorders.

Video Playlists (Beta) 🎬
Recollective is an ideal platform for collecting and analyzing video for qualitative research. Participants can submit videos via their mobile devices, desktop webcams, or by joining live meetings and interviews.
Recollective allows perfectly-timed video clips to be saved by simply highlighting text in video transcripts. In this release, study administrators can now group those video clips into Video Playlists so they can be sequenced, previewed and exported as a highlight reel.
An interactive playback bar appears below the playlist preview video. It highlights the relative duration of each clip, simplifies clip selection and skipping within a clip. You can even drag the entire clip section to reposition it in the playlist.
Video Playlists can be accessed from the “Admin” and “Reports” menus within a study.
Playlists are also accessible while saving excerpts in video transcripts. Admins are able to create new playlist without leaving the transcript page.
This release also includes updates to the Excerpt Report which can be used to find and filter existing video clips for inclusion in one or more playlists.
We plan to offer two playlist export options. This initial beta includes the first of the two options, Multiple Video Files, which exports a playlist as separate video clips, in order, within a single ZIP file.
The second option, which will arrive soon, goes further by combining the separate clips into a single video with smooth transitions and customizable text overlays.
Message Templates: Study visibility control
In late July, we released Message Templates which allowed administrators to save and re-use message texts. This feature has been enhanced to allow templates to be limited to select studies.
This improvement ensures that Moderator-role admins only have access to relevant templates. Analysts will also be shown the filtered list of templates within a study but they can always clear the filter to browse all saved templates.
When saving or updating a template, a “Study Visibility” option now appears to permit the selection studies. If none are selected, the template remains visible to all studies.
Multimedia Task: Improved webcam capture
When collecting video via the Multimedia Task, the webcam recorder is now loaded directly in the page instead of a pop-up window. If “Video” is the only response type enabled, the webcam recorder will appear instantly. This improvement streamlines the overall flow for participants and ensures the task instructions remain visible at all times.
Studies Card: Select Studies
The customizable home page of a Recollective site includes a “Studies” card listing all available studies. Multiple pages and cards can be added to this area. Admins can now configure additional “Studies” cards to focus participants on select studies.
Webhook: New event “Activity: Available”
Integration with Recollective sometimes depends on external systems being made aware of key actions that take place within the site. Such external triggers are called Webhooks and we’ve added a new event type, “Activity: Available”. This new event will be triggered whenever an activity becomes available in a study. One can focus the webhook on activities within select studies and those visible to select segments. The event applies to all activity types.
Security: HTML Sanitization
To improve the overall security of the platform, Recollective now limits the inclusion of custom scripts and embedded page elements from third-party sources. Recollective previously allowed administrative users more flexibility in this area, but this new approach ensures user accounts and their data are better protected. If you would like a special script or third-party component integrated into a page, please contact our help desk for assistance.
Usability Improvements
- Pending Review: It is now possible to mark an entire activity as reviewed instead of doing so for each activity response or task. This option appears above the response table on each activity’s overview page.
- Video Playback: When a video is floated over the page to allow viewing while scrolling a page, that floating video can now be resized in addition to being repositioned.
- Account Registration: Password field labels now clearly indicate when a new password must be defined, ensuring users don’t think they are being prompted for an existing password.

Message Templates 🎉 🎉 🎉
Recollective now allows administrators to save and re-use templated messages!
Administrators can leverage templates to save time and ensure consistency in communications. Templates can be used to invite, welcome, remind, support, prompt, question, thank, warn or guide participants.
Message Templates are simple to create, find, preview and use. Each template can have one more of the following values:
- Subject
- Message
- Login Button Label
- Signature
In some areas, these values are combined to create the final message. We’ve also added two new dynamic values for use in the Signature area:
{sender_fname}
→ Sender’s first name{sender_lname}
→ Sender’s last name
Template messages can be created in two areas of Recollective:
Site Admin > Settings > Message Templates
A new section appears in the Site Administration area which permits Analysts to manage all templates created within the site.
Study / Site > Email Broadcast > Save as Template
Administrators also have the option to save an email broadcast message they’ve composed as a new template to ensure it can be reused in the future.
Once templates have been created, they can be accessed in a variety of areas. Note that an option to limit the visibility of a template to specific studies is coming soon.
Expand each section below to see how templates are deeply integrated into Recollective.
Poll & Prompt Tasks: Segment Creation
When defining Poll and Prompt tasks, choices can be configured to assign one or more Basic Segments. It is now possible to create new segments while defining these choices. Newly created segments will only be visible to the current study but can be updated so they are available to other studies.
Segment Visibility Improvements
Segments are defined for the site but their visibility can be limited to select studies. Various improvements have been made to ensure limited-visibility segments are exposed to additional studies when needed:
- Study Copy will now update segments that are visible to the source study to ensure they are visible to the newly created study.
- Bulk Import of participants within a study will ensure that any existing segments being assigned are made visible to the current study.
Usability Improvements
- Live Activities: All meeting reminders will now directly link to the live meeting entry page to reduce the number of clicks necessary to join a meeting.
- System Check: Admins that conduct a System Check while in Support Login mode (i.e. acting as another user) will not have the results saved against the account being supported.
July 11, 2022
System Check: New Guidance
Recollective recently created a System Check tool that helps users prepare for live meetings. Users are now actively guided to complete a System Check if they have not done so in their current web browser within the past 30 days. They are also guided to re-test if they did not pass the check.
A tooltip with the text “Ensure your browser is ready for live meetings” will now appear in two locations. The first will appear over the System Check button seen on the activity overview page for Live Group Chat and Live Video Interviews activities.
The second tooltip will appear when entering a new live meeting. The option to complete a System Check is always available on the entry page but the new tooltip will draw the user’s attention when it is required.
System Check: Viewing result
The outcome of each System Check conducted by users is now stored and made visible to administrators in two areas.
The first is a data table seen when editing a panelist or admin account in the Site Administration area. It is titled System Checks and lists each and every check the user conducted. It includes the date, operating system platform, browser name/version, IP Address and the outcome of the test.
A system check result can be Passed, Issues or Failed. The outcome label can be selected to view relevant details. A downloadable report is available for advanced debugging requirements.
The most recent System Check Result for each participant will also appear in the Participant Summary table for both the Live Group Chat and Live Video Interview activity types. The test outcome can be selected to view more details.
Improved Usability: Adding video
When users choose to add a video, the user interface has been improved by displaying the types of video submission options as highly-visible tabs. In most areas, “Record Webcam” will be the default option.
Multimedia: Screen recording preview
When users choose to record their screen, a subtle preview of the selected screen is now displayed behind the instructions. This assures users that they’ve selected the correct screen, application or browser tab for the recording.
Task Setup: Skip reason collection
When a task is optional, a new option appears to allow admins to control whether participants are asked why the participant is skipping the task. This was previously enabled by default and could not be disabled. It is now optional and disabled by default.
If “Ask for reason if skipped” is enabled, the “Skip Task” question will continue to appear when participants press the “Skip Task” button during activity completion. All tasks created prior to this update will have it enabled to ensure consistency in the participant experience.
Agreement Template: Personal Information Consent
In many countries, it is required by law to get a user’s consent prior to the collection, processing and storage of personal information. Recollective now offers customers a built-in template labeled “Personal Information Consent” in the Agreements area.
This consent agreement follows best practices and guides administrators to fill-in essential information within select [[placeholder]]
values. Those placeholders must be replaced before the agreement can be activated. Note that this template is only offered in English as this time.
The ability to have the “Agreement Page” appear inline below the opt-in statement is also a new addition to Recollective’s powerful Agreements features. This option ensures click-through agreements are compliant with legal standards while avoiding tall or intimidating opt-in statements. The inline agreement box has a maximum height and users are expected to scroll through the agreement within the space provided.
Usability Improvements
- Webcam Recorder: A user’s own video is now horizontally mirrored while recording
- Edit Admin: A confirmation message now appears after admin accounts are updated

Stream: Option to expand all responses
The summary stream shows recent activity responses and discussion posts. It also allows Analysts and Moderators to highlight and save text excerpts. Longer text posts start collapsed to save space but can be expanded to see them in full (with paragraph breaks). Rather than having to expand each one separately, a new “Expand All” control now appears as a switch above the stream.
Excerpt Mode: Updated switch control
Analysts and Moderators can highlight any text shared by a participant to save it as an excerpt. After text is highlighted, a menu will appear with a “Save Excerpt” option. Once an excerpt is created, the page enters “Excerpt Mode” which shows details in the left-hand margin. All existing excerpts are also highlighted. Admins can enter into this mode at any time via a switch labeled “Excerpt Mode”.
The “Excerpt Mode” control will most often be found in the top-right portion of the page next to an “Options” menu.
Home Page: Updated menu
To improve the usability of the flexible card-based Home Page, some menu options have been updated. For example, “Page Layout” is now “Edit Page”.
Charts: Pie charts in “Percentage” mode no longer include absolute values
Summary charts can be shown with “Values” or “Percentages”. Pie charts previously included the values alongside the percentages but those are now hidden in “Percentage” mode.
Authentication: Emailed Code or Login
Unauthenticated users following a link from an email will be presented with two options, “Send Code” or “Login”. The emailed code (e.g. ABC-123) allows them to enter without needing to know a password, which is ideal for new users joining a study.
Panelists that verify their identity in a particular browser will benefit from an automatic login experience thereafter. They’ll only be prompted to re-verify their identity once every 30 days unless they change their browser or follow an emailed link that has expired (e.g. more than 24 hours old).
If the secondary verification flow is not desired, it can be disabled in Site Admin > Settings > Email Settings.
Note, however, that invitations emailed to new administrators will always require an emailed code. This exists to secure the onboarding of new administrators. The prompt seen by those invited to register only includes a “Send Code” option given they cannot login.
Note that invitations emailed to new panelists will not require a code if the invitation is accepted within 72 hours. After that time, the invitation email will still function for 30 days but panelists must provide an emailed code to start the registration process.
Other usability enhancements
- Poll tasks: Choices labels and data values can be edited after responses have been received
June 2, 2022
Segments: Automatic limiting of new segments to the current study
Segments created within a study will now only be visible to the study in which it was created. Segment visibility can still be edited at any time in the Site Administration area.
Recall that can be created various ways within a study:
- Bulk Import within a study
- Screening: Poll configuration
- Screening: Quota limit configuration
- Advanced Participant Filters: Saving filters as Smart Segments
Email Verification Disabled for Self-Registering Users
When participants join a study via a Shared Invitation Link, the flow was recently updated to require immediate verification of the email address provided (an emailed code was requested). To minimize friction for new participants, this requirement has been disabled. An update will be introduced in the future that will allow user-provided email addresses to be verified without interrupting the registration flow.

Permissions: Ability to hide unreviewed responses from Clients
Standard and Journal activity responses can be marked as reviewed by Analysts and Moderators. A new setting now allows Clients of a study to be limited such that they only see fully reviewed responses. This is ideal for studies requiring manual reviews to ensure personal information was not shared by participants (e.g. in webcam recordings). This new setting can be found in Study Settings → Permissions.
Security: Updated settings to control automatic login
To assist new and returning panelists, links in outgoing emails can perform an automatic login. Analysts can now control if this feature is enabled and how it is configured. If an automatic login link has expired, or is followed by an administrator, a secondary verification code can be provided for instant access without a password. This secondary identity verification can now be disabled while still benefiting from automatic login links that last 24 hours by default.
Multimedia: Text response can be optional while still having a word minimum
It is now possible for Text responses to a Multimedia task to be made optional while still enforcing a word limit if and when text is provided. This is ideal for when a video OR a text response is desired and admins want to ensure a minimum amount of text is given.
Task Response: Option to open instructions in a new window
It can be useful for participants to keep the task instructions in view while responding. This is especially the case when the task requires they record their screen or webcam.
When “Video” or “Screen Recording” responses are enabled for the Multimedia task type, extra emphasis is given via an additional control below the instructions. All other tasks will have only a small “pop-out” control in the top-right corner of the task instructions area.
Once the instructions are opened in a separate window, it can be resized and kept visible while responding, even while recording one’s actions in another browser tab.
Poll Field: Dropdown shown if there more than 10 choices
Profiling participants sometimes means offering long selection lists for poll fields (e.g. list of countries, states, cities, etc.). Questions with more than 10 choices will now present as a dropdown instead of a long list of checkboxes or radio buttons.
Security: Panelist-provided email addresses must be verified
When participants self-register (i.e. they followed a shared invitation link), they’ll be asked to retrieve a code sent to the email address provided. This ensures the address is valid and in their control. The same flow will take place when participants change their email address.
Emailed-verification codes are now 3-letters and 3-numbers, separate by a dash.
Webhooks: JSON payloads supported (e.g. Slack Integration)
It is now possible to configure a Webhook to submit its parameters and values as a JSON payload. This is required by various popular tools, including Slack via incoming Webhooks.

Profile fields can now be shown on any home page via a new Profile Fields card. Administrators can select which fields appear and in what order. Participants will only see the fields they are permitted to see (due to segmentation) and are guided to the first incomplete field. A card can feature a single field (e.g. doing a quick poll) or one can sequence many fields.

The study and activity names appear in the breadcrumb along with a progress bar that spans the width of the page.
The task instructions and response area are now clearly delineated in white sections over a theme-coloured background. Form controls are now larger and centred. The help option (“?” bottom right) includes an “Ask” option which opens the in-study message form.
Profile Fields: Segmentation and screener branching
It is now possible to limit the visibility of a profile field to select segments of panelists. This is useful for screening questionnaires and the Account Settings page.
